Cancer is a crab not a lobster. I'd love to change it myself, but it isn't an option. Thanks and take care. â€" Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.36.118.59 (talk) 01:09, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Merge

The astrology section in the Cancer (constellation) article requires some serious culling since there is already this article.--JyriL talk 20:24, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Astrology is a separate topic from astronomy. It is a good idea to keep astrological reflections in a separate series of articles, interlinked with the astronomy constellations via some consistent and neat system, for those who happen to be interested in both topics. Astrological texts can be long and extensive, while astronomical texts can be overly technical and full of listings. I believe astronomers and astrologers alike thinkt that would be a good solution. Myth is another topic however - myth is important for amateur astronomers for memorizing the constellations, and I can imagine it's important for astrologers for motivating their beliefs... Don't Merge

  • These are really different disciplines sharing a somewhat common nomenclature but interpreting it in vastly different ways. Merging astronomy and astrology would be akin to grouping chemistry with alchemy because both share the same roots. --09:17, 14 February 2007 (UTC)Dmuk

Where is the famous persons page?

Carmelita said it was moved, but i can't find it. Was it deleted?â€"Preceding unsigned comment added by Applekid-a (talk • contribs) 19:28, July 25, 2007

It was reimplemented as a category, Category:Cancers. As you can see from the redlink, that category no longer exists. Compatibility

Can someone explain the whole "compatibility" thing somewhere? On each of the twelve astrology sign pages, there is a compatibilty section that shows whether that sign has Compatablity, Possible Compatabilty, Incompatibility, Squared Compatibility, or Opposite Compatability with another sign. I understand compatible, possible and incompatible, but what does "Squared Compatibility" mean, and is "Opposite" any better or worse than "Incompatible"? I'm sure that if I don't understand it, there are other visitors to the website that also would like an explanation. BucsWeb 12:29, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

  • It seems that, instead of answering the above question about "Squared Compatibility", someone has decided to remove that category. Now, someone checking this page has no clue what their compatibility is with Aquarius, Aries or Gemini. Removing a section doesn't answer a question, it only creates more questions, so I am reverting this section back to how it was before I asked my first question. BucsWeb 20:42, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Name of this sign

Does anyone have a problem with the name of this sign, and the fact that one of the worst human deseases shares that same name? --Nathanael Bar-Aur L. (talk) 13:43, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

  • It's not as though the astrological sign was named after the disease. The word Cancer comes from the Latin Cancri which literally means "crab". The word has been used as the name of the astrological sign far longer than it has been used as a disease. According to its entry on Wiktionary, the word cancer was applied to cancerous tumors because the enlarged veins resembled the legs of a crab. If anyone has a problem with the two sharing the same name, perhaps they should have a problem with whoever named the disease rather than the name of the astrological sign. BucsWeb (talk) 13:58, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
As a Cancerian, I have always preferred the poetic version Moonchild which was often used for Cancerians in the early 1970s. That name, however, is just a nickame, therefore not official so could never be used for a Wikipedia article in lieu of the correct Cancer.--jeanne (talk) 07:45, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
i dunno who appointed you arbitor of what is "correct", but an awful lot of newspapers (majority?) have used the term "Moon Child" since those 70s you cite. it should definitely be prominently in the article, as an "alternate" name at the very least. and maybe a redirect page of its own.
also, some ETYMOLOGY of the name is in order -- did it just SPRING UP as a poetic/"PC" alternative in the 60s/70s -- indeed, to cast off resemblance to the disease? -- or is there actually some history there? any ancient/latin/etc uses of a corresponding term?
is this name change reflected in most other languages as well? 66.105.218.66 (talk) 23:32, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

White horse symbol for cancer

How about including a section re the old white horse symbol for cancer? â€"Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.174.251.206 (talk) 14:06, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

...or the constellation was probably the original Canis Minor or connected with the constellation including the star Procyon, and with the other constellation Sextans located southwest. In ancient astrology, Cancer may be the 6th not the 4th sign, when one adds Orion, Perseus and Auriga when the sun, moon and planets crossed farther north or south on the ecliptic. The idea of a "horse" instead of a "crab" is interesting, unless the adjacent constellations Leo and Gemini each resembled a horse. 71.102.3.122 (talk) 06:46, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Cancer was symbolized in a number of pre-modern European cultures, depicted as a boat, or boar (pig), and chicken/rooster. They and the Chinese/East Asian cultures depicted the constellation of Virgo of the zodiac as a bear or a cat. The modern day constellation design of Cancer and Virgo (astrology) are based on the ancient Greeks and Mesopotamians' idea of what these imaginary and artifically constructed depictions of star groups looked like not shared by every culture. 71.102.24.62 (talk) 06:10, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Current image in use

The image being used at the moment looks more like a lobster than a crab - isn't it obvious? I think a change is in order (offhand I realize they're both crustaceans, but still. An obvious image in keeping with the name, no?).--203.79.96.4 (talk) 11:49, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Why is this so unfinished?

Id like to say first it is NOT a lobster. Why can't we change it to the crab!? Second, the characteristics section is so unfinished and really did not even have any characteristics anyway. Upsetting. I'll be working on fixing someone's MISTAKE! The other signs have so much info and this one doesn't. â€" Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.59.101.190 (talk) 15:52, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Redirection of Western Zodiac signs

On 22 October 2012 the contents of the articles for the individual signs of the western zodiac (Pisces (astrology) etc.) were removed and replaced with redirects to Astrological sign#Western zodiac signs. These edits were made by User:Dominus Vobisdu with the edit summary: Unsourced and unsourceable cruft. No justification for stand-alone article. This did not seem to follow a community discussion.

Following concerns raised at the Reference Desk I will, after posting this, restore the articles to the form they were in immediately before their redirection. At least some of the articles seem to have been significantly reduced in size also prior to this redirection, however I have not reverted these changes.

Because I am sure editors may wish to discuss this (perhaps to reinstate the redirects, or make other changes to these articles), however a discussion spread among the talk pages twelve articles in question would be too dissipated, I suggest Talk:Astrological_sign#Redirection_of_Western_Zodiac_signs as a centralised discussion location. An editor with more experience than I in Wikipedia policies may wish to move this discussion to a better location. LukeSurl t c 15:20, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Expanding stub to an article for a class assignment

Model for this article

Pisces (astrology) (B-class) seems to be a good example of how to write about an astrological sign in an encyclopedic style, using published book sources rather than dubious online sources. MartinPoulter (talk) 17:16, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Corrections to dates, date and citation format in sign articles

I have created a module which encapulates values for the dates the Sun enters and exits the various signs; the data is taken from the U.S. Naval Observatory's Multiyear Interactive Computer Almanac and covers 2015 through most of 2050. The Template:Zodiac date produces some erroneous results, so I hope to implement the change this week.

It is only practical to implement one date and citation style for the module and infobox, so it would be helpful if we can agree on what format to use for the various sign articles. Please discuss at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Astrology#Corrections to dates, date and citation format in sign articles. Jc3s5h (talk) 20:55, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
